In July 1942, the Devil's Brigade was created. Under the official name 1st Special Service Force, American and Canadian soldiers were combined into a special unit that was specially trained to fight behind enemy lines. The roots of many special forces after World War II can be traced back to this unit. The many night operations, for which all faces were blackened for camouflage for the first time, earned them the nickname Black Devils from the German Wehrmacht, which shows the enemy's great respect for this relatively small unit. The 1st SSF completed many successful missions in Italy and France from 1943 to 1944 and was able to decisively influence situations that were important for the course of the war.

An important piece of equipment for the Devil's Brigade was the specially designed V42 combat knife, which was also part of the intensive close combat training. The handle made of pressed leather discs ends in a tapered hammer. A thin leather padding under the slightly curved guard element was intended to prevent injuries when thrusting. The coated blade made of non-stainless carbon steel SK-85 is ground on both sides and has a grooved thumb rest in the ricasso area. This legendary dagger still adorns the coat of arms of the US Army Special Forces today.
